If a tooth has become too damaged, an extraction may be necessary. This could be due to cavities that have been left untreated for too long or other dental issues. Removing wisdom teeth is another common reason for tooth extraction. At West Lakes Dentistry, we’re here to take the stress out of the procedure. Make an appointment with us today in our Mound or Chaska, MN offices.

What to Know Before a Tooth Extraction

Extraction is commonly a safe, routine procedure that may be advised for damaged teeth, crowding, certain infections, and/or impaction. During the procedure, we will give you an anesthetic to make sure you are comfortable.

Because there is a risk of infection with any oral surgery, we may prescribe antibiotics before and after the extraction. It’s important that we understand your full medical history, any medications and supplements you’re taking, and if you have certain conditions, including:

  • A heart condition, including damaged or man-made heart valves
  • A lowered immune system
  • Liver disease (cirrhosis)
  • An artificial joint

What to Expect After a Tooth Extraction

Recovery usually takes a few days, and we may prescribe painkillers to help ensure you are comfortable. You’ll want to rest for at least 24 hours after the procedure and limit your activity for at least a day or two after that. Be sure to take medication as prescribed. Apply an ice pack to your jaw in ten-minute periods to help with any swelling.

Eat soft and/or liquid foods the day after your procedure. Your dentist will provide you with a list of approved foods and others to avoid. Gradually introduce solid foods as your tooth extraction site heals.

Dental Hygiene

Continue to brush your teeth and tongue to avoid bacteria buildup, but avoid the extraction site. Floss regularly. After the first 24 hours, rinse your mouth regularly with a solution of salt and water (1/2 a teaspoon of salt to 8 ounces of warm water).

When to Contact Your Dentist

If you are experiencing tooth pain, it may a good time to visit us at West Lakes Dentistry. Our highly experienced dentists can diagnose your oral health issues and determine if a tooth extraction procedure is right for you. Don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions you may have.
